On this day in 1918, more than 100,000 Romanians gathered from across the region in Alba Iulia to witness a vote by the Great Assembly, which united Transylvania, Crișana, Maramureș, and Banat with the Romanian Kingdom. This anniversary has been celebrated since 1990 as Unification Day, or Great Union Day — Romania’s national holiday.
In the city where unification was formalized, Alba Iulia traditionally serves as a key location for celebrations of the past and present along with the nation’s capital, Bucharest.
In Bucharest, and cities throughout the country, parades take place and numerous other cultural ceremonies are organized.
Happy Great Union Day, Romania!
